Richard Burchell

Medical Specialist

Richard graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2007 and spent a three years in private practice before enrolling in a small animal residency program.

In 2012 he was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Pretoria and worked there for three years. During this time, he was twice awarded the “clinician of the year” award and also completed a residency through the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM). Richard then moved to Massey University in New Zealand as a senior lecturer and a few years later he moved to James Cook University. After 8 years in Academia, Richard relocated to the Sunshine Coast and worked at North Coast Veterinary Specialist centre for 3 years before joining Dr Craig Thomson at SCVS.

Richard has taught hundreds of veterinary students and trained a number of small animal medicine residents and has co-authored 30 peer reviewed publications in the Veterinary literature and 3 book chapters.

Richard continues to provide teaching support to James Cook University. Richard has also been invited to provide CPE for veterinarians in South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia and China and is active in continuing education for veterinarians.

When he is not at work he enjoys spending time with his beautiful family and his big goofy Great Dane, Ernst.
